Our
Services
We offer basic
skills instruction, GED test preparation, and English as a new language
instruction for adults. Based
on each student’s needs and preferences, we provide either one-on-one or
small group instruction. Learner Centered
At the Simpson
County Literacy Program, adult education is “learner centered.”
We ask students what they want to learn, and what they need to be
able to do with what they learn. Their answers determine what we teach. We have the most up-to-date learning resources designed
specifically for adults. Also,
because students have individual needs, we have many materials which
address differing learning strengths and weaknesses.
We also have a large reference collection.
Most importantly, tutors utilize real-world materials from their
students’ lives to make learning relevant. One-on-One
Some people learn
best without the distractions of a classroom.
They may be new or developing adult readers, or they may not be
able to attend a class at the time that it is offered.
They may be learning English as a new language.
For those students, we provide one-on-one instruction.
In this instance, we arrange for a tutoring site that provides
convenience, safety, comfort, and privacy for both the tutor and the
student.
Small Group
Some people learn
best when their learning environment provides a social outlet as well as a
larger support system. Again,
they might be new or developing adult readers, adults preparing for the
GED, or adults learning English as a new language. Currently, we serve GED students through LIFE – Learning in a Fun Environment.
Kathy Gillespie teaches the class on Monday nights in a classroom at the
Simpson County Literacy Program office. Evangeline Bishop works
one-on-one with those students needing instruction ourside the classroom.
